The Local Governing Body

Local School Governors form a Local Committee reporting to The Board of Trustees and make decisions about the strategic direction of Darrick Wood Junior School.

The Local Governing Body (LGB) meets at least once per term as a whole group.  School Governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities. They can only act collectively, not individually. The Governors are made up of parents, members of staff and co-opted Governors.

The Role of the Governors

The Local Governing Body is ultimately responsible for the school and must promote high standards of educational achievement at the school.

The main duties of the governing body are:

  • to provide a strategic view of the school by establishing a vision and setting the purpose and aims of the school within an agreed policy framework.
  • to appoint and oversee the work of the headteacher
  • to monitor and evaluate the work of the school and progress against school improvement priorities.

In order to do this, governors need to gain knowledge of how their school operates through training, by attending meetings, and by getting to know their school community, for example through visits to the school during the school day. The LGB also uses Link Governor roles to establish a stronger link between the Governing Body and aspects of the school's provision. This includes Link Governors for safeguarding, English, Maths, transition, SEN, Pupil Premium and Health & Safety.
